Goodness knows, that's already a battle I'm losing!
I want them to be useful.
No handprint molds or macaroni necklaces here.
Does that make me a terrible mom? Don't answer that.
We had some extra kids here the other day and I needed to keep them busy.
We had gone to the thrift stores the day before and bought red, white, and blue items.
The plan was to make 4th of July wreaths.

I'd hoped to find styrofoam wreath forms at the thrift stores, but didn't.
Our nearest Hob Lob is a 35 minute drive, so I used embroidery hoops instead.
We cut strips, strips, and more strips of fabric. Maybe 1.5-2" wide?
Then put on a Disney movie and have the kids tie knots while they're watching.

It's so easy, you could even do it naked. Ya know, if you wanted.
Not that we'd do that here.

Just keep doing knots and scooting them close together. The closer they are, the fuller the wreath will look.
It's a shabby, country, cottage look.
And when they were done, I trimmed the ends to make the fabric strips similar lengths.
Because I'm picky like that.

(pretend you don't see that bent curtain rod above the wreath, where The Baby has hung Tarzan style from the lace curtains.)

Altogether, I spent less than $5 for two big wreaths.
And had several hours of quiet kids.
And saved the world from a lot of bad fashion.
You're welcome.

what a good idea!
Oh, Beki... I am lovin' this. I have to run errands today so perhaps I will stop and buy me some 4th of July-ish fabrics. :-)
Genius, I say!
Ooo...another good idea that I can do with the boys. My 5 year old would totally dig that.
(BTW: my Father's Day photo gift, inspired by you, was a huge hit. I swear I saw tears in his eyes....thanks again!)
This would be a great way to use up left over fabric scraps from other projects.
Wish my granddaughter lived closer to do this with me!
Maybe I'll put together the supplies and directions and send it to her to do with my daughter.
Thanks for the idea!
So, about this naked crafting...
This is an awesome idea! And I can do this one!!! LOL. Thanks for sharing!
What a fabulous idea. Thanks for sharing and I think my boys would love to that one afternoon!!!!
Thanks again!
Trasie
As usual, another awesome idea to plagerize, I mean, inspire! Good thing that imitation is a form of flattery...you are my muse!
I'm horrible at crafts for kiddo myself for all the same reasons btw.
Incredibly cute and creative...way to go!
That's really cute! Glad you got a couple of hours of quiet... sounded like it was much needed :)
Festive and fun :)
what a great project to keep kids occupied!
Ha Ha love the curtain rod. We have had a "couple" just like that on our back door. We finally had to graduate to a stiffer rod that will not bend> Instead, the hook part where it attaches to the wall gets bent all to heck, when the kids pull on the curtains and then pull the whole thing down on their heads.
Love the scrap wreath idea. I think it will be cute for our front door, and I think this will be our project for tomorrow! Thanks!
You are too funny! And way too creative for me. Great idea.
And, by the way, I am completely with you on the craft thing. I hate it when I have to pretend I don't know what happened to that certain little oh-so-carefully handcrafted item one of the kiddos is desperately searching for. But will never find unless they spend a lot of time at the landfill.
Funny, we have the matching curtain rod at our house. Maybe our third kids are related.
oh my goodness, that is adorable! i think i'm going to have to do one for christmas... and fall... and valentine's day... oh man haha :)
and i tried mango limeade today for the first time, thanks to you, and it was FABULOUS! oh my it's my new fave!
SO CUTE!!
Awesome Idea Beki! I'll need to do that with the kiddos too....gotta love that quiet! :)
Torri
Another fabulous idea from Beki! I really enjoyed looking at all the knock offs of the Beki DAD photos. There's a lot of talent out there!
Really great wreath!
Very cute! I love it - will have to copycat it for the 4th and perhaps other holidays as well!
Beki this is fabulous! I love it!
stinking cute!
hilarious about the bad fashion!
Great idea and I like the naked idea!!!
What a great idea! I just might have to steal this one from you. And FYI: I won't be naked when I do it, LOL
That is cute - I hate kid craft clutter too and I feel so guilty throwing it out. We might have to do that one. We're going to be in the car a lot over the next few weeks. I can see doing it in the car.
Must I steal from you again? UGH! I need to come up with some of these ideas but MY BRAIN IS FULL so I'm glad you are doing it for me :)
That turned out great!! I totally hear you about being picky about crafts. This just can't be helped in my house with my 4 year old... She's SO crafty & wants to do something with her hands constantly. We have an 'art box' where all my unfinished projects go to get recycled by her! lol She's become this little mixed media artist & I love it, but that box expands to cover the whole kitchen some days...
The wreath looks great!
LOVE the wreath!!!! It's been raining here for months (ok, days) THIS would be a great craft!!! You're my kind of lady...I HATE messy kid crafts...if anyone's going to do a messy craft it'll be me! xo
Girl you make me laugh, if it's not wrestling bugs, it's bent curtain rods with mini Tarzan! I guess that's why they call them "curtain climbers", huh? Loved the idea! Very creative! Can't wait to show my 2 daughters who collectively, have given me 5 grandchildren so far. Mabye I should archive this for the 2 reproductive children still at home!
we do all our crafting naked
Fantastic idea!
Also, I certainly hope you learn from my harrowing experience at the Goodwill and don't bring a beverage or any food in there with you. You will get The Evil Eye. Or Eyes, depending on if The Evil Eye Giver has two eyes or not.
I love this! This is a great craft project for the family.
oh my gosh- that's a great idea!!! And it's so cute. :)
Glad it worked out better than your tye die fiasco. Althought that totally WAS a good IDEA.
What a fabulous idea! That turned out great!
Super cute wreath! (and the sushi was delish...it had been tooooo long) wow i hate being away from bloggers like you...hope to be back in the swing next week.
